Emergency Response teams have reminded us all to "be prepared" for natural and man-made disasters. This session offers information and a reminder for tourism businesses and Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs) to consider the level of planning required to assist staff, guests, and visitors during an emergency. How might you manage business and destination reputation following an emergency event? What can be learned from an emergency such as the Fort McMurray Wildfires? What preparations can you make in advance to ensure a fast recovery from an emergency or disaster?
This panel will provide an update on the BC Tourism Emergency Coordination and Reputation Management Framework that is being developed with the Tourism Industry Association of BC, in partnership with a tourism industry lead committee; Destination BC; Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training; go2HR and various industry partners. BC’s tourism industry is fortunate to have partners like Emergency Management BC who is providing additional support along with developing tourism specific planning resources and who will provide an overview of the programs and areas of responsibility they oversee.
A special focus of this panel will feature Fort McMurray Tourism sharing the valuable key learning from a Community Destination Marketing Organization perspective following the devastating wildfires in 2016. WestJet will also speak to the importance of emergency planning, the role of social media during an emergency and what it has meant to be a tourism business leader in corporate citizenship by providing support when disasters occur.
