Gwendal Castellan

Sustainable Destination Specialist
Tourism Vancouver

Gwendal is the delivery specialist for Tourism Vancouver’s sustainability program expanding the scope of engagement beyond energy conservation to take a comprehensive approach to destination sustainability. In 2012 with Tourism Vancouver he launched the delivery of an innovative program in partnership with BC Hydro to deliver energy management support to Member businesses. Conservation projects implemented with Members have already saved over 7.5 Gigawatt hours, enough energy power to charge 1,581 Teslas for a year or power an average 200-room hotel for 5.4 years.

His multifaceted career path has helped build a vision of global sustainability based on the value of local community-based initiatives. His diverse experience reflects a common thread of a desire for finding solutions blending technology and communications. He has designed water conservation curriculum for schools in Western Australia for the Water Corporation, planned the imaging resources of the Canadian satellite RadarSat over Asia, Oceania and South America, produced the feature length film “Long Road North” documenting his journey from Patagonia to the North West Territories of Canada by bicycle and provided energy conservation expertise to thousands of homeowners using an electric cargo bicycle to carry all the testing equipment in Vancouver.

Gwendal holds a Bachelor of Science in Geography from the University of Victoria, a Sustainable Energy Management Associate Certificate from the British Columbia Institute of Technology, he is an Association of Energy Engineers accredited Certified Energy Manager and a fellow of the THNK School of Creative Leadership.
